Incubation is a urban project located in Tema - developing city of Ghana. The site is located in Central Business District which has been planned to become the city center of the neighbourhood. Nevertheless, the project ended up with a number of concrete skeletons spread around the site. Even though the business buildings are abandoned, the ground floor of the district became one of the biggest slums of the city.
The idea of the project was to incubate life in the abandoned office buildings to enhance investors to move their companies to the district. This solution would influence the development of the area and improve life conditions of the locals. The project introduces elevated walkways going above the existing streets and through the existing abandoned buildings. By this solution, the liveable area would move up and settle the skeletons. Moreover the office buildings are connected by the walkways what improves the connections between companies.
The walkways are placed on top of detachable, prefabricated steel frames what gives the possibility for the development of the future. Moreover, the prefabricated frames are the structures which might be self use by the locals to build their own huts or stores. The shape of the intervention follows the broad studies about people movements of the area. The walkways follow the most common pathways, what also give the possibility of an extra shade.
